I’ll be brief here (and explain myself later), but this is another non-trad song which Jon derives from Bellamy again, saying, “From the fantastic Wake The Vaulted Echoes triple Bellamy CD issued by Free Reed, now sadly unavailable. It includes loads of great obscure performances including this little number. I love the verses, less sold on the chorus, but a handy number to have up your sleeve.” It was written by an American duo Lou and Peter Berryman and Mainly Norfolk is excellent as always on Bellamy’s discovery and also the curious fact that it appears as a bonus track on the WTVE CD set and is not included in the cover track list. Perhaps that’s in deference to Bellamy having grown tired of it as it became such a popular request.
I’ve got to learn this – I’ve always been a sucker for patter songs.
I love this song BUT I have tried to play this song over 3 different connections (IP’s) and it is saying “file not found” on any of them. Hope it is solved soon.
I have the same problem. I just get a “file not found” message every time.
As I presently, can’t get Jon singing, I went to the Berryman web site. What a treasury of delightful, quirky lyrics. Thankyou AFSAD http://www.louandpeter.com/lyrics.html
The iTunes Podcast has it.
Also getting “File not found”, but the song has arrived in my iTunes, so I’m listening to it from there.
What an unusual song. Not one for my repertoire, but good fun nonetheless!
I can’t play it either. Just keeps telling me “file not found”.
It can be found at http://www.afolksongaday.com/podcast/podcast_feed.xml for downloading.
I also get the message “file not found”.
The track is available from the RSS Feed (and I presume from iTunes too.)
It could be that this page is titles the song “A chat with your mother” while the file on the RSS Feed is called “a_conversation_with_your_mother”..?
Cheers
Nick
the song plays for me on XP – but on Win 7 I get “file not found”.
It’s playing for me, too, on Windows XP.
Clever words, but I’d have a hard time learning this tune! It’s another of those no-tune-tunes to my ear! Well done for mastering it, Jon, but it’s not exactly to my taste.
So, it’s my birthday today and ‘It’s F-word this and F-word that.’ Nice! Hahahahaha! Fortunately, I have a consolation! A very kind person has bought me a copy of Fay’s ‘Looking Glass’ album as a birthday present. And I will be at the Bellowhead concert in St George’s Hall on Saturday, courtesy of another kind friend. So happy birthday to me!
Yes, happy birthday to you, Jane! Nice presents you got 🙂
I remember this from the Bellowhead “Dirty Weekend” at the South Bank Centre on Valentine’s Day last year – sung by the choir, not Bellowhead, and given a faster treatment than this version.
Didn’t know Peter Bellamy had sung it!
Happy memories eh Maureen!
Oh yes, most definitely, Shelley!
I trust last years obvious technical gremlins ahven’t made the journey with us. How’s the head Jane?I confess to get a little carried away – it seemed a good idea at the time!
The jury is still out on this one!
@ Jane……..this is Muzza’s daughter
and he notes that rumours of his demise on thr 3rd Nov proved to be unfounded (despite a near miss!)
and wishes you “Happy Birthday” for today…. he hopes to be his old commenting self soon.
@ Muzza’s daughter: My, the likeness is startling! I’d have known you were Muzza’s daughter anywhere, save he’s known on here to go around on occasion with a single sock, which might be a distinguishing factor!
I knew rumours of his imminent demise were scurrilous. I was hoping he’d make an appearance for my birthday. The good wishes from his sick bed are much appreciated and reciprocated. Soooo glad you’re alright, Muzzy! Come back soon!
Thanks to Diana, Skyman, Jan and John B for your birthday wishes too. For the record, I never got to the gin – which is just as well, as it was wine to see the birthday in from the night of the ninth and a whole bottle+ seemed to have disappeared by 1am. Still, it was only the weak white stuff. I am usually on the red, like today! So the G&T is on hold. I have the ingredients though, and will report back on the addition of sugar when I get ’roundtuit,’ as we say ‘up North.’ Further for the record, I have had no hangover, no cake, but plenty of ice-cream!
Now ref the songs, I am glad I started celebrating at ‘Mary Ann,’ as who wants a chat with their mother on such an occasion! The song still doesn’t do much for me, but I greatly enjoyed your Marianne Faithful link, Skyman. The lass could sing. And you’ve got to admire a trooper. 19 albums over 47 years! She’s still singing, witness her 2011 album ‘Horses And High Heels,’ which you can sample smoke-husky tracks of on Amazon’ The half-dozen reviews make very interesting reading too:

I have other ‘thangs’ to AFSAD about one of my birthday jaunts (courtesy of Pierre Walsh on here!) to Laura Marling’s Manchester Cathedral concert, in particular about her excellent support band, The Leisure Society. However, I have out-owled even missen today and Remembrance Day is here, so I shall sign off ’til the morrow.
Get well, Muzza. We’ve all missed ya!
Yes, she calls me ‘Pierre’ folks! I managed to get our Jane a seat in that cathedral – wasn’t easy – “I can’t stand all night, Pierre!” was her plaintive cry…
Yes Muzza, get well soon, we miss you.
Wishing Muzza well from the AFSAD team…
Jane the Liesure Society are very interesting. They have an album called Into The Murkey Water that was played in the office and got my interest enough for me to copy it onto my phone. I’ve played it a few times. I must say the balance has been tipped and I’m going to buy a copy as I’ve just discovered it’s on vinyl too.
We bought two Leisure Society cds from the group at the gig Simon – Jane has the older one and I got the Murky Water one. The singer says a lot of the cd stock was destroyed recently in a fire in London!
Going back to issues raised by the song though… I don’t know how it is with youngsters now but in my day it was a definite no-no to swear in front of your Mother; most disrespectful and embarrassing to boot! It may have been cool to use the f word with your mates, but you kept your lip buttoned when ma was about!
Happy Birthday Jane…………Bellamy’s lost verse now found!
There are sexy Bradford wenches-atrimmin’ of their bushes
Suffer scratches, bites and bruises-doing what a catmandoo
Swillin’ gin and singin’ folk songs-gulping red wine down aplenty
It’s from them I would expect to hear the F-word, not from you.
and I have no doubt I will !
Muzza got the dates wrong thought it was the 20th then was a day ahead of myelf on the 9th but up to date now. Confused dot.com. It does not make a lot of sense does it? Have emailed so all okay.
Not sure my opinion has changed since last year.
Opinion re:song not my comments above. Not with it today!
@ Muzza: “There are sexy Bradford wenches…” I do not know where you get the plural from as I am one of an effin’ kind! – Queen Jane…Approximately – HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
@ Muzza: The above still stands! Hahahahahahaha! And very glad you are still alive! LOL.
Happy efin Birthday Janey
(I note that every body got it right) What a plonker I am….when making the note yesterday…I forgot that several years have elapsed to enable folk to get things right.
Yet again AFSAD has depleted my bank account as I located some copies of Wake the Vaulted Echoes on two of the usual sites.
Happy Birthday to fact finding, epistle writing, folk law expert, doffing and cat bothering Janey…we miss your jolly contributions to AFSAD………and the old HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA
Happy Effin, Doffin Birthday Janey!
Yes….I missed the L out in my name plate but…hey…it seems to fit!
Happy Birthday JJ
Well……..At least most of us are still here to enjoy this song, with a lyric which is so painfully true……Language that is even on TV programmes where you would not expect to hear it ….. and from folk from whom you would not expect to hear it!
Soooooo….. Mrs. Mary Whitehouse deserves an apology for the derision she received way back in the 60s in her efforts to prevent the drastic fall in standards.
Happy Birthday to Janey…our devoted .catbothering friend….and still at it !
