Jon Says, “I heard this by Kate Rusby on an Andy Kershaw session many years ago. I was a big fan of Kate & Katherine and subsequently Kate’s solo stuff, so it was fortuitous that my finger happened to slip on to the record button of the stereo whilst the programme was on, giving me opportunity to learn this little vignette…” I can add nothing to that other than a broad grin.

What a fine and cheeky song! Thanks, Jon, for entertaining us with it.
The blog English Practice over the Internet shows a YouTube video of Kate Rusby singing Yorkshire Couple and the song lyrics. The video seems to be an extract from her DVD Live from Leeds, which is a recording from Leeds City Varieties Music Hall in September 2002.
A reader’s comment in this blog also tells us that this is not a traditional song but was “actually written by Jim Mackie from Pontefract. He is in his 70’s alive and well and attends the OpenMind Acoustic night at the Grove Inn on Wednesday nights in Leeds. ”
Thanks for the writer info Reinhard…..I will add this to my notebook…and to my “AmDram version!” http://www.youtube.com/user/NForest82#p/a/u/2/CzDy50ajjGI
Will my late Grandparents ever forgive me for using their photo?
I remember hearing the same Kate Rusby session and really liking this song so it was a real pleasure to hear it again, especially sung so well.
I think someone may have listened to the song out in Zimbabwe. This is a famous cricketing sledge between batsman Eddo Brandes of that country and the great Aussie bowler, Glenn McGrath.
‘After Brandes played and missed at a McGrath delivery, the Aussie bowler politely enquired: “Oi, Brandes, why are you so fat?”
“Cos every time I make love to your wife she gives me a biscuit,” replied Brandes.’
Good stories keep going and adapting.
Dunno if this was too obvious to mention, but my wife sings “Yellow on the Broom” — http://sniff.numachi.com/pages/tiYELBROOM.html — to this melody. She got the it that way from Fiona Hunter.
Just catching up – Great song; isn’t the tune borrowed from one of the many versions of “The Female Drummer”?
Also catching up! Knew I would like this one, being a Yorkshire woman! Full of that Yorkshire-typical accepting of life with a humorous twist. Ye reap what ye sow! Hahahaha!
Was trying to think where I had heard this tune, and agree with Dave that it must be The Female Drummer. Perhaps Barrand and Roberts?
Just shared this with my cousin’s husband in Spain… he says he got a shed… I’m waiting to hear what my cousin bought the milkman… hahahahahahaha!
Hi I am delighted to hear how much you like this song. I would like to point out though that it was not written by Kate Rusby, but by Jim Mackie, a long established singer songer writer from Pontefract. Although not creditted on Ms Rusby’s album (and not paid any royalties for its use) the song is Mr Mackie’s own original work, not a “traditional” annonymous song. This has been highlighted to her several times, and we hope eventually Jim will receive due credit for his work. If you would like to check out any more of Jim’s work, including many other examples of humorous observations, please visit his own website http://www.jimackie.com/
@Joy………….phew you sent a shiver down my spine and I quickly checked my version and I was relieved to see that I had acknowledged it was written by jim Mackie……you are quite right…..all the other versions seem to “indicKate” otherwise.

What a delightful tale. I believe Jon sang it with some relish.
What a wonderful old fella singing this
He is indeed Muzza, now dont go hiding your light under a bushel!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh……………..I feel a Youtube upload coming on!
Oh Dear…..Just wondered why ‘Bacca pipes’ video had got onto the site (see august 29th 2014 above) and found that it goes on and on through Old Muzza’s complete youtube repertoire!!!sorry folks….don’t know how to delete it!
I rather think that Jim’s original song was added to by Roy Atkinson ~ I have a CD of Jim’s other writings by the way

I wonder if the myth about milkmen being ‘naughty’ was true
