Day four and here’s the song that Jon sang on the Mike Harding show last week One Night As I Lay On My Bed, which belongs to the family of night-visit songs. Jon claims Louis Killen as his source of this, although a quick search also reveals versions by Steeleye on their debut Hark! The Village Wait, June Tabor on Abyssinians and Shirley Collins on Adieu To Old England.
As always there are lyrical variants, with some following events through to the following morning. It’s also markedly similar to Cold, Haily, Rainy Night, although it’s a bitter wind to be endured here. Here’s another Mudcat link for you to explore if you want to.
What joy. Great songs so well sung.
‘Family of night visit songs’ – such a nice description. I especially like those where the visitor is anything but earthly too, à la She Moved The Fair. But this is a charming song, beautifully rendered.
What a brilliant Idea Jon – Glad I only had four days to catch up on when I heard of it. Love them all up to now and sure the rest will be as good.
Thanks very much and looking forward to the next 361!
This is the first AFSaD I heard last year – it was stunning then and it’s stunning now. The delivery is perfect.
I missed the very early ones as I had problems with the podcasts. Good fortune comes to those that wait. Nice one again Jon.

Haha, shouldn’t you be chrganig for that kind of knowledge?!
God, I love this song.

My source was Tony Rose.
Sneaky! Nevertheless a rather charming song. Well done Jon.
I’m with Phil’s ‘God, I love this song’ and Jon sounds to enjoy singing it too. Suits his voice very well. Beautiful! I am soooo jealous!
Off to listen to your version now, Phil!
@Jane: I do miss the link to Mainly Norfolk I have to go the long way round to read the lyrics etc. but it is a small price to pay for the reprieve of AFSAD.
It seems to be unanimous everone likes this song. Gosh I had trouble with the spelling of unanimous, it looked wrong and I had to really consider it so hope it is correct.
@ Diana: Mainly Norfolk didn’t appear here so much in the early songs until Simon and Reinhard collaborated more formally. Soon be accessing the lyrics the easy way!
@Jane: Thanks vey much I got so used to the link I forgot you are going around again whilst I am only half way through my first year. I do like to read all the info that Reynard publishes and I am advancing – recently bought June Tabor’s “Ragged Kingsom” – really good.
@Muzza: Yes, that’s some bridge. Some people find it so unnerving to drive across it that there is a service that provides a driver to drive the person’s car to the other side of the bay for them.
I dunno…..it took the whole song to get him in the bally window and then finishes as we get to what could be ‘the interesting bit’!
